How Long Do Bathroom Faucets Last?

It depends on several factors.

The Role of Faucet Cartridges in Determining Lifespan

Think of the faucet cartridge as the heart of your faucet. How durable it is largely determines how long your faucet will last. In fact, most faucets available on the market meet the GB18145 standard, which ensures they are designed to handle years of normal use.

Here is how the calculation works:

Calculation

Details

Cartridge Lifespan

70,000 cycles (each cycle includes 3 on/off actions, total of 210,000 on/off actions)

Daily On/Off Actions

Assumes 50 on/off actions per day

On/Off Actions per Cycle

Each cycle includes 3 on/off actions

Annual On/Off Actions

50 times/day × 365 days = 18,250 actions/year

Estimated Cartridge Lifespan

210,000 actions ÷ 18,250 actions/year ≈ 11.5 years

As long as the other parts are of good quality and the faucet is used properly, it should last around 10 to 12 years.

How Material Impacts Faucet Durability

Another important factor in determining how long a faucet lasts is the material it is made of. The most common options for faucet materials are copper and stainless steel.

Copper:

Low-Grade Brass: Contains approximately 55 percent copper and more than 3 percent lead. This composition is harmful to human health and does not meet safety standards.

GB 59-A Grade Copper: Contains at least 59 percent copper with 1.0 to 1.6 percent lead content, meeting national standards for safety.

Lead-Free Copper: Contains at least 59 percent copper and less than 0.25 percent lead. This is the highest material standard and complies with United States drinking water safety regulations. It is more difficult to process and has higher costs, which is why only a few manufacturers can produce faucets using lead-free copper.

Copper quality directly impacts the faucet’s plating and its resistance to oxidation. Lower-quality copper can lead to issues such as peeling plating or surfaces that become blackened due to oxidation.

Stainless Steel:

201 Stainless Steel: Contains about 5 percent nickel, which makes it prone to rusting.

304 Stainless Steel: Contains at least 8 percent nickel and offers excellent resistance to rust.

If the material used for the faucet does not meet the required standards, the faucet is unlikely to last as long as it should.
